Chau Ram County Park
We moved to South Carolina at the perfect time!
Warm weather, full bloom greenery, and high water make for some beautiful scenery. With so many new places and things to do and see, it was hard to pick where to go first. We decided to start off easy and close by for a small day trip, so we drove an hour and a half to Westminster, SC and found Chau Ram County Park.
There was a $2 fee per car to enter the park, which you deposit in a drop box at the front gate. Once entering the park and driving a mile down the road, you turn right for parking. There are multiple picnic shelters to enjoy lunch or snacks, and immediate access to the 40 foot Chau Ram Falls on Ramsey Creek. Had I known the accessibility to the water better before we went, I would have packed swim suits for the kids to splash around in the shallow, cool water.
The park has over 4 miles of clean and well kept hiking trails to explore and a suspension bridge to cross, or to toss sticks off of (that’s what we like doing!). It is the longest suspension bridge in the county, and must be crossed at least 10 times if you visit, apparently.
We followed one of the easier, shorter trails along the Chauga River, perfect for little legs, and found ourselves next to one of the four rapids. These rapids would be perfect for tubing or kayaking! And, there were plenty of rocks for climbing and throwing!
The park also has camping sites and bathhouses. This would be a great little spot for an overnight camping trip or a get-together with the family! There are plenty of areas for swimming, exploring and even a playground for the kids.
The Chau Ram County Park is closed from mid-November through February, but you can call 864.888.1488 for more specific dates and information, or click the link for directions to the park.
It’s a hidden gem and referred to as the “Best Kept Secret” by the Oconee County Parks Recreation and Tourism department. We will be revisiting this beautiful little park hopefully soon!
